About City Harvest
City Harvest exists to end hunger in communities throughout New York City. We do this through food rescue and distribution, education, and other practical, innovative solutions.
Today, City Harvest is New York City’s largest food rescue organization, helping to feed the more than 1.5 million New Yorkers who are struggling to put meals on their tables. We will rescue over 100 million pounds of food this year and deliver it, free of charge, to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens and other community partners across the five boroughs. Our programs help food-insecure New Yorkers access nutritious food that fits their needs and desires; increase our partners’ capacity; and strengthen the local food system, building a path to a food-secure future for all New Yorkers.
At 14+ years old, you can volunteer at Mobile Markets (year-round) and Greenmarket Rescues (a seasonal opportunity from June to fall). To become a volunteer, you will need to be fully vaccinated and submit the waivers below. You will also need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone over the age of 21 (who has attended a volunteer orientation) to all shifts they participate in.
The first step is to attend a virtual volunteer orientation. As a young person, you will also need your parent/legal guardian will need to attend. To sign up for the next available virtual orientation, please visit our portal. The dates listed reflect all availability. Once an orientation reaches capacity it will be removed from the list, but cancellations may cause dates to reappear. In the meantime, please review our updated Policies and Procedures and the requirements from the City of New York.
