About Behind the Book
Behind the Book develops engaged readers and writers in underserved NYC public schools by designing and delivering programs that are multi-disciplinary, culturally responsive, and promote deeper connections to books and their authors. We empower the next generation of readers and writers by nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and self confidence – giving them the tools they need to reach their full potential. Every year, we make hundreds of students published authors and illustrators by creating students books featuring their art and writing.
Volunteer Opportunities
Behind the Book offers a wealth of volunteer opportunities assisting students with reading, writing, and research. Our volunteers provide critical learning support for our students. Volunteer opportunities take place during the school day in Pre-K – 12th grade classrooms throughout Manhattan and the Bronx, and workshops run 60 – 90 minutes. There are short trainings before each workshop led by the BtB Program Facilitator (PF). Both the teacher and PF are in the classroom for the entire session, and expertise in teaching or the workshop topic is not necessary.
